At Least 62 Young Guatemalans Have Died From Malnutrition This Year

Malnutrition is to blame for the deaths of at least 62 children under the age of 5 so far this year in Guatemala, the government said Wednesday.

Nearly 9,800 youngsters have been diagnosed with chronic malnutrition, the secretary for food security, Luis Monterroso, told reporters.

Half of Guatemalan kids under 5 do not receive adequate nourishment on a regular basis, according to official statistics that also show 52 percent of the country’s 15 million people are living in poverty.
